Skate legend Christian Hosoi on celebrating Father’s Day at Dew Tour
Love + Guts featured artists Christian Hosoi, Lance Mountain, Pat Ngoho, and Brad Bowman hosted a VIP Father’s Day Special on Sunday on the Dew Tour Park course, inviting fans and their families to skate with them in a private session.
Other skaters in the mix for the session included Mike McGill and Lester Kasai, and there were some skate photog legends on the deck, too, with Bryce Kanights and Ray “MRZ” Zimmerman getting the shots. Fans brought classic decks and some original magazine covers for the skaters and photographers to sign, but mainly it was a loose, fun, casual Sunday at the park that just happened to feature some of the biggest names in skateboarding history.
We caught up with Christian Hosoi during the session – his sons Classic Hosoi and Endless Hosoi were also skating – to check in on the Father’s Day vibes.
DewTour.com: First off, happy Father’s Day! What’s behind the enormous smile on your face right now?
Christian Hosoi: “This is like a dream come true. I’m 51 years old, I’ve still got some of the best sponsors in the world and my own company, Hosoi Skateboards, I had four girls and two guys from team competing her this week. I’m honored to still be involved in it all, and even more honored just to be here with my kids, on Father’s Day, sessioning the bowl with them and having them them shoot with some of the best photographers in the world. It’s like a blessing from God for me.”
DewTour.com: What was the idea behind this Love + Guts VIP Father’s Day Special session?
Christian Hosoi: “Love + Guts is all about showcasing stuff we’re passionate about. On one hand it’s the about the artwork of some of the most creative minds from throughout the history of skateboarding, including some of my good friends out here today, and on the other hand it’s just about being out here for fans. Some of these fans here today have been skating for 30 or 40 years and now they have kids of their own. They’re bringing their kids to meet us to say, ‘Hey, this is the guy I had pictures of on my wall when I was your age!’ It makes me feel humbled and grateful that I’m still alive, I’m clean and sober almost 20 years, just to be here to experience a beautiful day like today.”
DewTour: I noticed you also have a great portrait out in the Dew Tour Experience fan zone that you painted of your own father, Ivan “Pops” Hosoi, and I know he has been a huge influence in your life and in your skateboarding, even managing a skatepark when you were a kid. Now your kids are out here ripping and I see you fanning out, getting clips on your phone for the ‘gram. Talk about full circle!
Christian Hosoi: To honor him is something that for me is the least I can do for everything he’s done for me, and I hope my kids feel the same for me, too. Being a father is actually something I dreamed of as a kid. I saw how much my father loved being with me and supporting me, and I’m so happy to be out here giving my kids the inspiration and the opportunity that they need to follow their dreams, in return. It means more to me than all of the accolades from my own skateboarding.
