Pop and R&B singer Destiny Rogers has featured skateboarding in music videos for her first two singles – “Tomboy”and “North$side” – and skateboarding features prominently on her Instagram account @imdestinyrogers, so we caught up with her after her set on the Dew Tour Stage on Saturday to ask her about the connection.

DewTour.comWhich did you get into first, skateboarding or music?

Destiny Rogers: I actually got into skating first! I got my first skateboard when I was 6 years old, and just fell in love with it. When I was around 8 or 9 my dad started taking me to the Lodi Skatepark like everyday, in my hometown in northern California. I started teaching myself to skate and being inspired by all the women skating.

DewTour.comHow did it come about to have Mariah Duran in the video for “Tomboy”?

Destiny Rogers: The director, Kyle Camarillo, is a well-known skate photographer and filmer, and while we were brainstorming ideas for my first single he asked who some of my favorite skaters are. I said, ‘Well, my very favorite female skater is Mariah Duran.” He made some calls, and a few weeks later she flew out to film in my hometown with me and a really great group of skaters. It couldn’t have worked out better. Now she’s a fan of mine, I’m a fan or hers, and we’ve gotten to be really good friends. It was so cool to look out from the stage and see her out skating on the Street course singing along while I was performing today.

DewTour: What does it mean to you to be able to bring your worlds together and perform here this weekend?

Destiny Rogers: It means a whole lot! I never would have thought I’d be performing at a skate event like this, in front of all the best skaters in the world.

Tomboy, the first EP from Destiny Rogers, is available on all streaming platforms.
