Broc Waring Leads The Way In Pipe Prelims

Broc Waring rode out of his mind in Friday night’s Superpipe prelims at the Toyota Championships scoring a 95.25 a full ten points ahead of anyone else in the field of 14 riders. With the top ten pipe slayers gaining a spot in the finals where they will join already prequalified boarders JJ Thomas and Steve Fisher the strategy was to do only what was necessary to make the cut. Still that did not stop 18-year-old Broc from completing a pipe run that could have been a podium finish in the finals the next day.

In the start tower things were very loose with the riders clowning each other and showing some of the same camaraderie you see on the ladies side of competition. All the riders were stoked for Broc and his run as he was followed by Spencer Shaw, Dylan Bidez, Scotty Pike, and Connor Leach rounding out the top five places. All these guys were the young guns of the prelims coming in with an average age of only 18. Hardly the elder statesmen of superpipe competition were Jack Mitrani (21) who’s pre-run freestyle rap had everyone in stitches and switch master Elijah Teter (25) who took the sixth and eighth spots. The last spots in the finals went to 19-year-old Brennen Swanson, Ross Baker and Chris Walker.

With the exception of Broc we’ll need to see all these guys take their A-game into the finals in order to grab the podium positions that JJ Thomas and Steve Fisher will be battling over in order to secure the Dew Cup Championship. You can expect the gloves to come off under the lights as a battle of young and old unfolds and both a Toyota Championship and overall Dew Cup Champion are crowned for the end of the ’09-’10 Winter Dew Tour.
