Day one of the iON Mountain Championships closed up shop with Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle Qualifier, punctuating an intense day of competition dominated by the women of winter.

The qualifier format consisted of 24 riders each being allotted two runs, with the highest score counting, to advance the top eight athletes to the final on Friday (which you can watch on dewtour.com/live at 5pm ET.

The slopestyle course grew faster as the day progressed, and since this event closed out the day, the lady snowboarders were forced to combat a speedy setup despite the wind factor.

“[The course] is good. It’s a little windy out here, but there is speed,” said Jamie Anderson, last year’s slopestyle champion. “It’s really fun, they did a great job!”

The entire day consisted of the various women’s events, which means a few ladies were pulling double duty looking to show their skills in both disciplines. Australia’s Torah Bright was one that everyone had their eyes on, expecting her to impress after her morning pipe performance.

“[Balancing it all] is the hardest thing, there’s just not enough time!” said Bright, following her first run—which she would need to improve upon in order to advance. “I’m shredding more than I ever have and loving snowboarding more than I ever have. So, I’m going to keep on keepin’ on.”

Unfortunately for Bright, during her second and final qualifying run she came up short on one of the jumps, which was enough to bump her out of the top eight regardless of what else she threw. Bright will be back on Saturday to ride in the Women’s Superpipe Final.

In the end, Anderson held on to the top spot with her first run. Anderson was so confident with her first performance she opted out of her second run knowing she had nothing to worry about. Anderson’s run included a backside lipslide gone tailslide on the first center down rail into a gap to frontside boardslide on the next rail, then she threw a cab 540 into a frontside 360 on the second jump, on the second set of jibs she took a 50-50 over the wallride to a tailslide up and over the A-frame box to fakie, and she capped her run with a switch 540 over the third jump and a clean backside 180 over the final hit.
