The women of freeski slopestyle took to the course today for their final event as part of the Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships and the first of five USSA-sanctioned selection events. With freeski making its inaugural showing at Sochi this February, the stakes were higher than ever today on Dew Tour’s world-class slopestyle course, as the riders went all out to impress the judges.

With the heightened Olympic importance of the event, eight athletes unleashed the fury today during the Women’s Freeski Slopestyle Final in an effort to not only win the Dew Cup, but to also earn a slot on the first-ever U.S. Olympic Freeskiing Team.

Coming into the final with the top spot from the qualifier was Maggie Voisin, who happened to be celebrating her 15th birthday (making her old enough to qualify for Sochi).

Throughout the final the women battled under adverse weather conditions. Despite the mostly clear skies, the riders had to contend with a brutal headwind. During the qualifier, the riders dealt with a tailwind that caused Grete Eliassen to fall and crack her helmet. Then, in the final round, the effects of the weather were undeniable as Ashley Battersby fell victim to the wind’s power on her final trick, causing her to crash, roll down the hill and in turn require immediate medical attention.

At the end of the first round of runs, Voisin found herself in third behind Kim Lamarre and the dual-discipline athlete Devin Logan on top — yesterday Logan rode out of the Women’s Freeski Superpipe Final in 6th, so everyone was ready for her to bring the heat on the slopestyle course to make the most of her weekend.

Despite being on the hill celebrating her birthday, Voisin didn’t seemed phased as she rode strong in her first-ever Dew Tour appearance.

“It doesn’t really feel that much different honestly. I don’t feel older, 15 isn’t old, but I’m having fun.” Speaking to her first run, “I plan on stepping it up. Want to clean up that 5 then I think I’ll do a 9 off the last jump. I’m just going to have fun and see where it takes me.”

Canada’s Dara Howell would have rode prior to hometown hero Keri Herman, however, Howell elected not to do her final run.

To Breckenridge’s Herman, 31, age is just a number. As the oldest freeskier in the final she seemed as confident as ever, but unfortunately for Herman and her fans, aka Herman’s Helpers or Herman Nation as signs read, she came up a little short on the score board. Regardless, it didn’t stop her fans from cheering her on at the finish line. She was in last place heading into the final run and ended her day in fourth.

“It’s awesome, my whole family is here. It’s just so fun to be at home with all my friends.”

Logan was sitting in a safe place after her run, and following another solid run she would ultimately stick with her first run score. Knowing she had secured a spot on the podium regardless of what was left to unfold, still Logan had to wait in anticipation to ensure she would ride out with the win.

As the birthday girl dropped in for her final run the wind seemed to have calmed, slightly. Voisin’s final run would not end up bettering her first run score, which left her standing in the third place position on the podium — not too shabby for a 15-year-old making her Dew Tour debut. Voisin’s best run consisted of a 270 onto the down rail into another back 270 out, then on the jumps she threw an unnatural 720 to a natural 720 safety off the donk to front 270 off the rainbow to haggard switch 540 into another 540.

In the end, Logan made her double-duty dreams come partially true as she earned the top spot in slopestyle and takes one more giant step toward fulfilling her Olympic dreams.

“I’m so happy! I really wanted to get on the podium yesterday in pipe, and there are so many good girls out there competing in slope,” said the happy yet humble Logan. I’m just really happy to be on top right now.”

Logan’s first and winning run included a lipslide to fakie on the first rail, to switch 270 on pretzel blind 270 out of the flat down rail, to right 540 safety into a switch left 540 safety, into Japan on the chicken coop to a straight slide on the A-frame rail before ultimately flipping a rodeo 540 safety on the final hit.

“I’m [feeling] amazing! I can’t believe I just won Dew Tour!”
